Highlights of the Women’s IPL Auction 2023
The Women’s Premier League Player Auction will be held at Mumbai’s Jio World Convention Centre. The Women’s IPL will begin its inaugural season in 2023, as Indian women’s cricket rises to new heights. The Women’s IPL teams are expected to be revealed on January 25, as several teams compete to own and operate the franchises. However, before the teams are revealed, there is another significant development in the Women’s IPL.
The WPL 2023 features five teams in total. Mumbai Indians, Delhi Capitals, Gujarat Giants, Lucknow Warriors, and Royal Challengers Bangalore are among these teams. While 1525 players registered for the WPL Auction 2023, the final list only includes 409 players.
The highest reserve price is Rs 50 lakhs, with 24 players opting to be in the top bracket. Harmanpreet Kaur, Smriti Mandhana, Deepti Sharma, and Shafali Verma, India’s Under-19 T20 World Cup-winning captain, are among the few Indians who have earned a spot.
In the WPL auction, Smriti Mandhana became the first player to be purchased, thus creating history. The Royal Challengers Bangalore paid Rs 3.4 crore for the star batter’s services, making her the most expensive player in the league. Then came Harmanpreet Kaur, who was sold to the Mumbai Indians for Rs 1.8 crore. Sophie Devine, a New Zealand aground, became the first overseas player to be sold at a WPL auction when she was bought by RCB for Rs 50 lakh. Richa Ghosh, Pooja Vastrakar, and Yastika Bhatia were among the top buys as international stars.
