The Khelo India Winter Games commenced in Kashmir

According to the government, the winter games provide a platform for the country’s youth to compete and advance to the point where they can represent the country. Holding the winter games in Kashmir not only benefits athletes but also promotes tourism.

The initial edition of the “Khelo India Winter Games” took place in Leh and Gulmarg during the months of February and March in the year 2020. The inaugural event in India was held to promote winter sports such as skiing, Alpine skiing, Nordic skiing, snow rugby, ice stock sport, snow baseball, mountaineering, snowshoe running, ice hockey, figure skating, and speed skating. The main goal was to popularize winter sports among the country’s youth.

Meanwhile, in South Kashmir, two tournaments were held under the Khelo India program in the Tral region of India, where athletes competed in sports despite the cold and snow. In a recent Mann Ki Baat program, Prime Minister Narendra Modi mentioned the Tral Snow Cricket Tournament.

The third edition of the Khelo India Winter Games is being held in Jammu and Kashmir at the world-famous ski resort of Gulmarg. Over 1500 athletes from 29 Indian states have arrived to compete in 11 sporting events. Gulmarg is hosting the Khelo India winter games for  the second time.

As stated by the Minister, “Khelo India Youth Games also allows for the discovery of new talent. Following that, top players are identified and given a chance at Khelo India-accredited academic institutions. The Indian government covers the cost for their boarding and training.
