M Pranesh became India’s 79th Chess Grandmaster

M Pranesh became India’s 79th Chess Grandmaster when he clinched the title in the Rilton Cup, the first tournament of the FIDE Circuit.

 A 16-year-old, M Pranesh, a chess player from Tamil Nadu, became a Grandmaster by crossing the 2500 rating threshold and completed three GM norms before he clinched the title in the Rilton Cup. The Rilton cup is the first tournament of the FIDE 2023 season, in Stockholm.

With the 6.8 circuit points he receives for this victory, Pranesh is now the early lead in the FIDE Circuit. For the 2024 FIDE Candidates, the player who gathers the most points at the end of the year is eligible.
All India Chess Federation congratulated M Pranesh by tweeting  “Congratulations to Pranesh M for winning the Rilton Cup at Stockholm, the first tournament of the FIDE Circuit and also becoming the 79th Grandmaster of the country!!”
